The statistics below report upon the results of youth that have participated in FLY's programs. At the end of each program, a Likert-scaled survey is given to the youth, their parents, and referring sources (judges, school officials, and probation officers). Here are the results within each of the three main FLY programs.

The Law Programs:

  • 96% of youth report that knowing about the consequences of crime helps them deal with conflicts and problems in a nonviolent way.
  • 95% state that they have the skills and confidence to resist negative peer pressure.
  • 94% state that they know more about how breaking the law affects other people, which makes them less likely to commit a crime.
  • 94% of the youth report that learning about the law helps them plan ahead, make healthier choices, and become less likely to break the law.

The Mentoring Program:

  • 90% of our volunteers complete their year long commitment with 70% opting voluntarily to continue working with their youth for a second year.  This statistic is particularly significant as national mentor statistics show that, on average, only 30% of mentors complete their commitment with youth.
  • 100% of youth report that because of the program they now have a positive role model.
  • 89% state their mentor taught them how to solve problems, set goals, and make future plans.
  • 89% are less likely to make bad decisions or get in trouble.
  • 83% of our drug-addicted youth get sober and have their probation dismissed while working with their mentor.
  • 89% of youth report, at the six-month mark in the program, that because of the mentor program they have reduced their drug and alcohol use. This is a remarkable change considering that the majority of Santa Clara County inner-city youth are addicted to methamphetamine.

The Leadership Program:

  • 100% report the program provided a positive adult role model in their lives.
  • 100% now have a sense of purpose and hope for their future.
  • 96% report that they now plan ahead and make healthier lifestyle choices.
  • 93% complete high school or get their G.E.D.
  • 92% say they now have confidence can resist peer pressure.
  • 73% become employed (before the program, only 20% of them had jobs).
